and the FOULS on....

This past week has been a busy one. We had Nana here, and it was wonderful. It was hard to drop her off at the airport, we didn't want her to leave. The kids cried....ALOT!! Dan called on Thursday and reminded me that he had a basketball tourney in Yuma on Friday and Saturday, so as soon as school was out on Friday we headed to Yuma. It's about a 3 hour drive from QC. We told Dan that we would be there around 5, (his game started at 7:30) and that we'd like to see him before the game because we would have to leave before the game was over to get home. We got there around 4:30 and I called Dan. No answer. I called again. No answer. We found the Arizona Western Campus and the kids ran around, nice campus, lots of grass!! 4 times I called Dan. No answer. I said to Jared, "I bet he's taking a nap". Jared said, "I wouldn't be surprised". Finally at 10 to 6 Dan called. Yep, he was sleeping. When he got to the gym we got to see him for about 20 minutes before he went into the locker room, and it was worth every minute!! The kids climbed on him, except for Ellie, she was scared of BIG Dan, but she finally gave him a 5 and a hug!!
It was fun to watch Dan play, he's super strong. Coach put him in about 5 or 6 minutes into the game, I don't think he was ready since he didn't have his shoes tied yet. In the first half he had lots of defensive stops and a BIG 3 point play!! His team was up by 10 or so at the half and Carter had fallen asleep, it was already 8:45, so we started home. After the game Dan called to tell us how it ended up. 2nd half was pretty exciting. At some point they were up by 15 or more, but then things started to go well for the other team, he gave some good details that I can't remember except that they had some questionable calls from the refs. Dan hit some big free throws down the stretch. At the end of the game there was 1.6 seconds left and it was SLC's ball under AWC's basket, Bruins are up by one. They threw the ball long to SLC's point guard and AWC's players basically held on to him so he couldn't go grab the ball. He finally breaks free and barely gets to the ball before it goes out of bounds, so he throws it in bounds to save it and one of AWC's players grabs the ball takes 2 dribbles and throws it up, and the buzzer still hasn't gone off. Questionable? Questionable. They did end up winning by one. Funny stuff. I love college basketball!! It was fun to watch the girls play, but I miss playing myself.

As if that game and seeing Dan wasn't excitement enough.....

We were watching the women play before the men, and I took Hailey, Court and Carter out into the hall to get a drink. When we came back into the gym, Hailey and Court ran across the base line to go back to our seats, and I was walking across the baseline. I got about 3/4 way across the baseline and turned around to see where Carter was, and he is just barely walking into the gym. The ball is down on our end of the court, ball is in play, and Carter decides that he's going to go the quick way to get back to our seat, but I didn't realize this of course. So off he goes, he walks in front of the girls bench, right past the coach, and I see him looking over towards Jared on the other side of the court, all of the sudden he starts to sprint across the floor towards Jared. Right at that exact moment the ball changes posession and it's the start of a fast break, whistles blow, yes, they blew the whistle on Carter, the coach runs after Carter and picks him up and carries him off the floor. My heart about jumped out of my chest!! He could have been trompled!!! and...the Fouls on.....Carter!! Luckily no injuries. I'm sure all the fans, and there were quite a few, were wondering what kind of mother I am. Who lets their 4 year old run onto the court? We had a little talk about the big thick red lines around the court, and that we aren't allowed to go over the line. Funny now, but a little scary at the time.

Awesome that you got to see Dan! And I think every kid has to cross the court gametime at least once. Good heads up play from the ref and coach!
